Dynamite
In 1846, an Italian chemist named Ascanio Sobrero invented nitroglycerin. Ascanio studied chemistry and medicine in Paris and Turin. He then earned his doctorate in 1832 at the University of Gieben .Later, he pursued a career as a professor at The University of Turin in Turin, Italy.
When Ascanio created nitroglycerin he was frightened at how powerful this explosive was. He didn't want it to be used because it was extremely dangerous. He would send secret letters and journal entries warning people not to use this monstrous substance. He even kept it a secret for over a year. This shows how dangerous this substance really was.

Alfred Nobel and his Experiments
When he was a professor he had a student named Alfred Nobel. Alfred became interested in how the explosive could be used for construction work and other sorts. When he went back to work at his family's factory his father and him experimented with nitroglycerin to find a use. In 1864, he then realized that if you mix the nitroglycerin with a substance called kieselguhr you can turn it into a paste and shape it into cylinders or rods, so that it would be easier to insert into drilling holes. He named it dynamite. This became a very important substance in the future.

Dynamite Explodes Into Our World
Construction workers and miners began to use dynamite to blow out big chunks of rocks. The dynamite reduced the cost and time of blasting rocks, drilling tunnels, building canals, etc. Although the dynamite was extremely dangerous it was continuously used throughout time. It made a huge difference. Before dynamite, in order to carve out rock such as tunnels for railroads or other transportation, workers had to carve out the rock with sharp tools. Sometimes, they would work the whole day, and only carve a foot of rock out. It was extremely time consuming and took a lot of workers. With dynamite, all they need to do was light the fuse, and their work was done for them.

Dynamite and the Military
Over time, dynamite was used in many wars to dig out trenches for cover and sometimes even to kill enemies. It was a powerful substance and became extremely useful. It was stronger than gunpowder and helped us dramatically. It was also used to fuel war machines. It's still used as an explosive today in wars, but it is a different formula used by the United States. Also, it has been overpowered by other explosives such as amatol.

Dynamite was definitely a great invention that changed people's lives. It made everything easier, and although it was dangerous, it was used everywhere. It is still used today in the military, and in construction work. Dynamite definitely changed our society.
